CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications

Trainings are offered each month for these American Red Cross certifications at the Downtown YMCA. Becoming certified can give you the skills and confidence to act in an emergency.

Lifeguard Certification

Lifeguard certification is a perfect start to anyone's dreams to become a lifeguard. Offered just one weekend a month between the months of February and May, this class is a fast paced and challenging program designed to teach and reinforce the fundamentals of lifeguarding. For those who are already lifeguards and wish to recertify, we also offer lifeguard recertification. This class is designed to review existing skills, go over new updates, and to reinforce lifeguarding fundamentals. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age to participate in this program.

YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles

This basic level course provides practical and theoretical information for instructors of all YMCA health and fitness programs. Included is information on leadership, basic exercise physiology, healthy lifestyles and safety guidelines, as well as the YMCA mission, philosophy and the national program training system. It is the prerequisite for all other YMCA health and fitness certification courses. Click here for registration details.

Foundations of YMCA Group Exercise

This course is designed to train staff members in the basics of conducting all varieties of group exercise classes. Course content includes the practical application of cardiovascular and neuromuscular exercise science, leadership and teaching skills for group exercise instructors, behavior modification and motivation information, and a practical session on general exercise selection and execution. This course is the required prerequisite for all other courses in the YMCA of the USA Health and Fitness Group Exercise Track. Click here for registration details.

YMCA Pilates Instructor Training

This course teaches exercise instructors the basic biomechanics and philosophical principles of Pilates exercise. Participants will learn a series of Pilates mat exercises, which are designed to improve muscle strength and flexibility, balance, posture, and overall well-being. Also included is information on how to incorporate Pilates exercises into effective group exercise and personal training programs. Practical sessions included. Click here for registration details.

YMCA Group Cycling Instructor Training

This course was developed in collaboration with Reebok University, originators of the Cycle Reebok program. It is designed to teach YMCA exercise instructors how to develop new and exciting indoor group cycle classes. The emphasis of this training is on providing instructors with the practical and theoretical skills needed to create a variety of safe and effective cycle exercise programs. YMCA Cardio and Step Aerobics Instructor

This course is designed to train staff members in the skills needed to conduct traditional group exercise classes such as step and high/low aerobics. Course content includes movement choreography and pattern development, skills for teaching group aerobic classes, class structure and components, practical sessions, and a practical examination. Foundations of YMCA Strength & Conditioning

A new instructor level certification course specifically designed for YMCA fitness center staff. Course content includes member service and orientation procedures, leadership and relationship building strategies for working with members, exercise science and practical applications, and exercise instruction for strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular training. Course includes practical sessions using various exercise equipment, case studies and a written exam.
